Kailash Mansarovar Yatra: The Complete Guide for Indian Yatris

संक्षेप में · In short

कैलाश मानसरोवर यात्रा के रास्ते, सही समय, फिटनेस, ज़रूरी दस्तावेज़ और ऊँचाई पर सुरक्षा — सब कुछ सरल शब्दों में।

For a Shiv bhakt, Kailash is not a destination — it is a calling. Mount Kailash (6,638 m) is believed to be the abode of Bhagwan Shiv and Maa Parvati, and Lake Mansarovar below it is said to have been created from the mind of Brahma. It is also one of the most demanding pilgrimages in the world. This guide explains, in simple words, how the yatra works and how to prepare.

Which routes are there?

Indian yatris reach Kailash in two main ways:

  • Via Nepal (private operators): Fly to Kathmandu, then drive into Tibet via the Kerung (Kyirong) border, rising slowly through Saga to Mansarovar. Some groups also fly to Nepalgunj–Simikot and cross via Hilsa. This is the route most private groups — including ours — use.
  • Via Lipulekh or Nathu La (Government of India): The Ministry of External Affairs organises the yatra through a computerised lottery, usually announced in spring. Seats are limited and the yatra takes longer.

Dates, routes and rules are set by the Chinese and Nepal authorities every year, so always confirm the current season's process before paying anyone.

Best time for the Kailash yatra

The season runs from roughly May to September. June to August is the most popular window. The full moon of Guru Purnima and Saga Dawa (the Buddhist festival, usually May–June) are especially auspicious — and especially crowded.

How fit do you need to be?

You do not need to be an athlete, but you need to be healthy. Most of the yatra is above 4,500 m, where there is about 40% less oxygen than in Delhi. Start preparing at least 6–8 weeks before:

  • A brisk 45-minute walk every day, slowly building to 8–10 km.
  • Climb stairs daily — it is the best practice for the parikrama.
  • Pranayama and anulom-vilom to build breathing capacity.
  • A full medical check-up, especially for blood pressure, heart and sugar.
Your body will not fail you on Kailash because you are old. It fails when you rush. Go slow, drink water, and listen to the doctor.

Altitude sickness: what to know

Headache, nausea, breathlessness and poor sleep are early signs of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS). It is common and manageable if handled early. Good operators build in acclimatisation days (we rest at Kerung and Saga), check every yatri's oxygen level with an oximeter morning and night, and carry oxygen cylinders. If symptoms get worse, the only real cure is to go lower — so never hide symptoms from the group doctor.

The Kailash parikrama (kora)

The outer parikrama is about 52 km over three days:

  1. Day 1: Darchen / Yam Dwar to Dirapuk (about 12 km) — with the darshan of Kailash's North Face.
  2. Day 2: Dirapuk over the Dolma La pass (5,630 m) past Gauri Kund to Zuthulpuk — the hardest day, 18–20 km.
  3. Day 3: Zuthulpuk back to Darchen (about 8–10 km).

Ponies and porters can be hired. The parikrama is optional — many elders do Mansarovar darshan and wait at Darchen while the group walks.

Documents checklist

  • Indian passport valid for at least 6 months, with blank pages
  • Recent passport-size photos (white background)
  • Medical fitness certificate
  • Copy of Aadhaar card
  • Travel insurance that covers high altitude and helicopter evacuation

What decides the cost?

Kailash prices vary a lot. The main factors are the route (road via Kerung vs. helicopter via Simikot), hotel category in Kathmandu, group size, Chinese permit and visa fees for that year, and what is included — meals, oxygen, a doctor, ponies, insurance. A cheap quote often leaves out the things that matter most at 5,000 m. Always ask for a written list of inclusions and exclusions.

What to pack

  • Down jacket, thermal inner wear, fleece, waterproof shell
  • Broken-in trekking shoes, woollen socks, gloves, cap, sunglasses
  • Sunscreen SPF 50, lip balm, moisturiser
  • Personal medicines (with prescription), ORS, dry fruits
  • Small items for puja — Mansarovar jal bottles, rudraksha mala
