In the Trikuta hills above Katra, the chant never stops — "Jai Mata Di". Day and night, families climb towards the holy cave where Mata Vaishno Devi is worshipped as three pindis. Behind this yatra is a story of devotion, patience and forgiveness.
Vaishnavi's tapasya
The story goes that the goddess took birth as a girl named Vaishnavi in southern India, in the home of Ratnakar. From childhood she was drawn to meditation. She later came north to the Trikuta mountains to do tapasya, waiting for the day she would merge with Bhagwan Vishnu.
Pandit Shridhar's bhandara
A poor devotee, Pandit Shridhar of Hansali village, once saw the goddess in the form of a young girl, who asked him to hold a bhandara for the whole village. Though he had nothing, the girl's blessing made sure everyone was fed. Among the guests was Bhairon Nath, a tantric, who sensed her divine power and began to follow her.
The chase and Ardhkuwari
To escape him and continue her meditation, Vaishnavi went up the mountain. Midway, she meditated for nine months inside a narrow cave — today's Ardhkuwari (also called Garbh Joon), often compared to a mother's womb. When Bhairon found her, she broke out through the other side and reached the holy cave at the top. There, taking the form of Maha Kali, she beheaded him. His head is said to have fallen on a nearby hill, where the Bhairon temple stands today.
The blessing of forgiveness
At the moment of death, Bhairon asked for forgiveness. Mata not only forgave him but blessed him: every devotee who comes for her darshan must also visit Bhairon's shrine — only then is the yatra complete. That is why yatris climb on to Bhairon Ghati after the Bhawan.
Mata resides in the cave as Maha Kali, Maha Lakshmi and Maha Saraswati, seen as three natural rock pindis.
The shrine has been managed by the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board since 1986, which built the modern track, battery cars, ropeway and helicopter service. The track from Katra to Bhawan is about 12–13 km.
