On the seven hills of Tirumala in Andhra Pradesh, Lord Venkateswara — Balaji, Srinivasa, Govinda — receives tens of thousands of devotees every day. It is one of the most visited places of worship in the world, and every devotee seems to carry a story.
The divine loan
The legend says Vishnu came to earth as Srinivasa and fell in love with Padmavati, the daughter of King Akasha Raja. To pay for a wedding fit for the king's daughter, Srinivasa took a huge loan from Kubera, the treasurer of the gods, promising to repay it by the end of Kali Yuga. Devotees believe that the offerings they put in the temple's hundi help Balaji repay this loan — and that he returns the favour many times over.
Why devotees offer their hair
Lakhs of devotees shave their heads at Tirumala. One story says that when Balaji was hurt and lost some hair, a Gandharva princess, Neela Devi, cut her own hair and offered it to him. Touched, he promised that all hair offered by his devotees would reach her. Offering hair is a sign of giving up ego and vanity.
The hair on Balaji's murti is real and never gets tangled.
This is a widely held devotional belief. What is documented is the scale of hair offering — the temple administration (TTD) collects and auctions donated hair, and the money goes to the temple trust.
The Tirupati laddu
The Tirupati laddu has been offered as prasadam for around three centuries. Made with ghee, besan, sugar, cashews, cardamom and raisins, it received a Geographical Indication (GI) tag, so only the temple can make and sell it under that name.
Visiting Tirumala
Darshan is managed by Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD). Special entry darshan tickets and accommodation are booked online, often months in advance. Many devotees walk up the hill by the Alipiri footpath, about 3,500 steps, as a vow.
