In Ahmednagar district of Maharashtra lies a small village that has made India wonder for generations. In Shani Shingnapur, many houses have no front doors — only door frames, or a curtain. The villagers say they do not need locks, because Shani Dev guards them.
The black stone
The story goes that, long ago, after heavy rains, a large black stone slab washed up on the banks of the Panasnala stream. When a shepherd touched it with his stick, blood is said to have oozed out. That night, Shani Dev appeared in the village headman's dream and said the stone was his own form. He asked to be placed in the open — with no roof over him, since the whole sky was his roof — and promised to protect the village.
Today the swayambhu black stone, about five and a half feet tall, stands on an open platform. Devotees offer mustard oil to it, especially on Saturdays and on Shani Amavasya.
Why no doors?
Villagers believe that anyone who steals in Shingnapur will be punished by Shani Dev before he can leave the village — with blindness, illness or misfortune. For generations, houses were built without doors and valuables were kept in open boxes.
There has never been a theft in Shani Shingnapur.
Theft cases have been reported in the media over the years, and some newer houses now have doors. But the tradition is real: in 2011, UCO Bank opened a branch here widely reported as India's first "lockless" bank branch, respecting local belief.
Change at the platform
For centuries, women were not allowed onto the platform to offer oil directly to the stone. In 2016, after public campaigns and a Bombay High Court order, the temple trust opened the platform to everyone.
